We are committed to providing all staff with tailored development activities to support their career ambitions. I wish that I could work fewer hours, but I still maintain a good work-life balance. Bonuses are significantly lower, however, the billable-hour threshold is 1, to reach the first bonus level.
I have worked on client-facing assignments for large, important cases and I've also worked on low-level, first-pass document review assignments. There may be some research assignments occasionally. Generally, work is appropriate for the junior level. I draft a range of simple to more complex motions, petitions, and written discovery. I spend a reasonable amount of time on discovery and privilege logs. I communicate with client contacts regularly.
Over the course of a transaction, I handle diligence, oversee junior-level associates and paralegals and have significant client contact. I engage in some document negotiation but would like to handle more.
Anything I don't feel comfortable doing yet, I have ample support from my mentor. This gives me the ability to learn from my mistakes at a very low risk. However, our computers and software tech is very clunky. The web platform is nice. The firm allowed us to take desktop equipment home, but I wish they had given us some kind of tech stipend. That would have been really useful. It could get better. There is a dedicated team for wellness initiatives, which has included encouraging exercise through friendly-competitions and healthy eating options in the office.
During COVID, the firm provided everyone with a subscription to a meditation app, which was appreciated. While we are encouraged to develop relationships with other attorneys as well, having an associate and partner you know you can turn to with questions from the start has been very helpful.
I still meet weekly with my partner mentor. BCLP assigns associates with associate mentors, partner mentors, and there's a quarterly check-in with an office mentor. Most partners are also more than willing to provide informal mentorship. Counsel positions are also available for those who like the practice but are not interested in partnership. Exit opportunities to clients or other in house roles also seem realistic. The outlook for promotion to partner is generally unknown, and the process is not transparent; even more so with respect to non-partner promotion e.
Promotion to partnership is extremely competitive. It also seems like there are other opportunities with the firm if partnership isn't an option so long as you do good work. The pro bono works can be big, such as work on voter suppression cases, or small, such as helping a low-income plaintiff resolve a dispute about a warranty. I'm personally partial to working on smaller matters for low-income individuals through groups like the Atlanta Volunteer Lawyer's Foundation.
Pro bono work can either come through the firm or individuals can bring in pro bono work through community organizations they work with. Generally, the firm handles a lot of nonprofit work and guardian ad litem work. After you hit 1,, your pro bono hours that count toward bonuses are not limited. If an associate gets on a big pro bono matter, then they can receive an exception to the hour initial cap toward meeting the 1, minimum. I've typically done hours of pro bono each year, and have always had support from the firm.
