I thought everyone called it a buggy. I don't think I've heard it called a shopping cart. Shopping cart! I didn't even know other people called it differently It's never "shopping cart;" that is too formal. It's simply a cart. I think I'd have a hard time in the south! A buggy is what a baby rode in back in another past era and they don't even call THOSE a buggy anymore its a stroller. I live in Connecticut and I've always called it a carriage but I think most people around here call them shopping carts. In Oklahoma its shopping cart! Which is where the cart was designed.
I do sometimes call it a shopping basket. Here in Oklahoma where the shopping cart was designed we call it a cart or basket. Here in England its a shopping trolley - a buggy is what we call a stroller.

In the south it is a buggy. I think I usually just say cart or basket. I just recall thinking it funny. I grew up until around 23 in southern Illinois, right across the Mississippi from St. I had never heard it called a buggy before, until I moved down to southern Louisiana. The comment from the person in St. Louis is a bit odd to me, considering I lived so close to the city all of my life. Maybe I just never paid attention?
