What is the difference between masonite and hardboard

Not sure, hopefully someone here will know for sure. I say that only because I know that my pieces on gallery canvas no frame needed do much better on ebay than those on regular canvas. Well, they DID…. If other people like it, that's a bonus.

Technically masonite is just a brand name of hardboard. The stuff I use is identical to masonite, but made by a different company. I use the kind that is smooth on only one side. I know some people seal the backs, but it seems uneccessary to me…this is a building material after all!

Yes, the edges can get banged up. I sand mine nice and smooth before painting, then seal, sand again the edges swell a little when the get wet from the paint the first time , seal again, and paint the edges. They are very neat and clean then. Paintings can be framed or hanged with mirrors clips or similar. If you cannot find a piece at the hardware store with clean corner, have them trim the edges so there are fresh corners, before the start cutting it down to size or do it yourself if you can.

My hardware store cuts it for free. I think they get a kick out of supplying an artist…lol. I also use mdf on occassion. I have several paintings that I did for myself. I love the way they hang so flush to the wall. Terry:wave: TerryMcClary.

Also when asked I for hardboard in England I got exactly the same think it was smooth on both sides though. When I started out I could not afford canvas and just about all my work for many years was on hardboard. In fact about a year ago when I started using more canvas it toke some getting used to the softer surface to paint on.

Today I still use it whenever I want to use textures In fact I sold 2 hardboard paintings just yesterday. I have hardboard paintings that hung in my bathroom and kitchen for years and were fine so I do think the quality is good enough, but the fact that it must be framed is something to consider and the biggest reason why I went back to canvas.

The other thing is if you let a big painting rest next to a wall the hardboard sometimes bend, but comes right if left flat again. I buy my canvas off the internet, so when I do that, I want to buy a fair amount. With the way ebay has been going, alot of listing fees are going without sales and I am almost out of canvas, and money! That is why I started too. I wish we had a Lowes or Home Depot so I could just wander the aisles for supplies. Particle board does not hold up well. If you try to screw something into a particle board panel it will hold until the object or the panel are pushed pulled or jostled in any way.

The tiny chunks of wood will begin to crumble and deteriorate. As a kid my friends and I used to find discarded panels of particle board that were left out in the morning dew and we would kick and chop them in half like martial artists. Furniture made from particle board has to use rather thick panels in order for it to be relatively strong. For this reason that kind of furniture tends to be excessively heavy.

In terms of both quality and cost, it is the cheapest of the composite woods. Particle board is also more affordable than most plywood. This is why it is used for disposable furniture like Ikea. MDF is a material that is made from mixing small fibrous bits of wood with resin and binding agents and then pressing them into panels of wood-like material. MDF is much denser and therefore much stronger than particleboard. Quality MDF is stronger and more flexible than cheaper plywood.

Many times you will find MDF being used in place of plywood on some projects. Where MDF really excels is as a substrate for veneer, thermofoil, melamine, vinyl surfacing, or heavy lacquer paints.

MDF is also used to make a lot of moldings. MDF, like particle board, is made of small fibers so there is no wood grain. Keep that in mind if you plan to make something to match your existing furniture.

You will need a wood veneer in order to stain it. In terms of Cost, MDF is notably more expensive than particle board but it is often used as a lower cost replacement for plywood because it can usually be found for less than the good premium plywood. You can feel how MDF is heavier than plywood if you compare them directly, so keep that extra weight in mind for any future projects.

Hardboard is awesome. Respirator is best Probably melamine coated OB10 said:. Melamine, that sounds kinda familiar. What's it supposed to be used for? This thread is more than 11 years old.
