Please read my disclosure for more info. As pod-based coffee machines like the Keurig rise in popularity, more and more people are becoming accustomed to this new technology. Are they more like drip coffee makers or espresso machines? How do they make coffee so quickly? In general: How does a Keurig Work? You could go and read the technical manuals, but who has time for that?
Instead, lets go over these machines, their history, and how they work at a high level. There are several types of coffee makers available. From cold brew makers and french presses to percolators and drip coffee makers , consumers have several options to choose from.
Over the decades, companies have taken great strides toward offering more versatility and ease-of-use in their coffee makers. What used to be a complicated task that required skill to execute properly can now be done by anyone at the touch of a button. Okay, that is oversimplified. It only took the touch of a button after you measured the water and the grounds. It still seemed like there was more convenience that could be brought to the coffee world.
Simultaneously, there was a developing need for coffee makers that could brew a single cup of coffee. I would argue that there was always a need for this, but the advent of the Starbucks age had made it clear that the ultimate in coffee convenience could only exist when coffee was available one cup at a time.
By using pre-portioned coffee pods in place of loose grounds, Keurig replaced the messiest part of the coffee-making process with insert pod. This started the pod coffee maker revolution, a movement that would spawn machines from Nespresso and Ninja , among several other competitors. Add in an early partnership with Green Mountain Coffee Roasters for the early pods, and Keurig had guaranteed their name would forever be associated with this new era in coffee brewing methods. As with most other coffee pods, k-cups are basically just a pre-measured amount of ground coffee sealed in filter paper and covered tightly with a layer of aluminum foil.
These Keurig cartridges are, in many ways, just like the coffee filters that you are used to using in drip coffee makers. The genius of them just comes in pre-measuring the grounds and packaging it all together for complete simplicity.
One crucial aspect of K-cups is their airtight design. The main concern about buying pre-ground coffee — instead of grinding your own coffee beans — is that ground coffee goes bad much faster than coffee beans. If you want to slow the degradation of coffee grounds, you need to remove oxygen and light, the two factors that cause much of the decay.
However, they last much longer than regular ground coffee because each container remains airtight until you are ready to use it. It's important to understand how these brewers work in order to keep up the maintenance. Lucky for Keurig owners, the way these brewers work is a very simple process. If the "Descale" light still appears after you've already descaled your brewer, you might need to take one extra step.
All the pipes need to be descaled—but you've already done that. Now the tiny pins that prick the top and bottom of the K-Cup also need to be cleared out. But these do not need to be descaled. They simply need to be freed of coffee grounds! After you've descaled your brewer, the tiny metal pins might still be hot: so take caution when cleaning the pins. Simply take a needle, paperclip, or toothpick and poke through the pins, clearing out any fine coffee grind build-up. It's as simple as that.
After you've completed a descale and a de-grinding, your "Descale" light will turn itself off and your brewer will be working at full pressure once again!
All this fuss about how we multiply our trashout landfills, polluted water. Polluting ourselves and the world round us: Now we make our coffee one-cup container at a time. More stuff to just "throw out" and not think about any more. Walk down the coffee aisle in your store and see the rows of K-packaged coffee brands. The army of K-cups each for only ONE cup of coffee that will just be simply "thrown out" once the grounds have been brewed.
And all this K-display means what had been there just isn't there any more. And all the BS about plastic bags. At least they can be used several times before being chucked. Some people are making money big here and don't give one Hoover dam about the environment.
I've cleaned needles and descaled with vinegar just like I did about a year ago. My machine is still making short cups. Also, there is water running back into the water carafe through the white spout going from the unit into the carafe that I haven't noticed before.
Gave my Aunt one for her 75th Birthday last Sept. When she brews a cup, the water spews out the side of the part where the pod sits. Seems to be hit and miss. She will then get a normal cup of coffee but, out of the blue, it spews the water out again.
What could be the problem? Our Keurig coffee maker at the office is doing some funny stuff!! While the coffee is brewing the water flows out of the side into the dispencer also into the cup at the same time.
The problem is it does give a full cup. I cleaned with vinegar. Whats wrong?? Have had ours for about 6 years now and use clean well water. Never have had to de-scale and use it regularly each day. Still going strong and brewing perfect cups each time! Would not part with it. I use the make your own My Kcup kit And folgers coffee. I just found your article after writing my Keurig article. Awesome job, I linked yours to mine;-. I bought my keurig in Knock wood I've never had any problems with it.
I only use filtered water so i've never needed to descale it. I love love love it. I've had one for about a year now and its been working flawlessly. People have to understand that since this machine is so compact and has small moving parts the tiny bit of build-up will cause issues. A friend recommended using filtered water and I haven't had any issues!
You cannot buy a system at this time that uses the K-cups and does not have Keurig components. Maybe someday when their patent expires, they license the technology or someone else buys them out.
For now, their coffee makers just don't seem to be a good value. For what they cost they should last 5 years or more with minimum maintenance. Got my Keurig two maybe three years ago and it functions flawlessly as advertised. Is ready to go in about three minutes in the morning, and then will make multiple cups every 60 seconds. Newman's Own Bold is excellent coffee. It makes restaurant coffee seem lousy. If my Keurig should die today, I'd have a new one before breakfast tomorrow.
Those cute little cups are horrible for the environment. By: Joakim Updated: April 16, Coffee is an essential part of our lives today — it works as a source of energy when you feel lazy in the morning and struggle to get out of your bed. And if you have the perfect brewer at your disposal, that is simply the best.
Talk about a nice coffee brewer and Keurig is one of the very first names that strikes. Keurig coffee brewers are quite well-known and are found in almost every other American household.
But have you ever wondered how does a Keurig works? Let us now have a detailed look at some of the major elements that are associated with a Keurig coffee machine. Making coffee using the Keurig coffee maker is a completely different experience. The Keurig machine uses K-cups, also known as pods, that contain freshly grounded coffee.
K-cups are available in a huge variety of blends, flavors and roasts. One pod makes one cup of coffee with a little effort and saves your time. K-cups are made up of a filter layer and a good quality plastic. The coffee remains fresh because it is covered with a foil layer that prevents moisture from ruining the taste of coffee. You just have to insert the K-cup in the machine and your hot and freshly brewed cup of joe is ready. There is no mess to clean up afterwards.
All you have to do is take out the pod that is used and throw it in the dustbin. The internal temperature depends on various factors such as the material of the cup. This will warm the brewer in advance and you can then insert the pods and brew your cup of joe. The brewer screen has the options for the cup size.
